Iowa Governor Hosts State Caucus Leaders & NASC at Annual Hunt
NASC State Caucus Manager Aaron Hobbs traveled across Iowa this weekend meeting with state legislators and DNR officials to discuss the challenges and opportunities the Iowa Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus faces as the 2006 legislative session approaches. Thanks to a gracious invitation from Caucus Co-Chair Senator Dick Dearden (D-Des Moines), Hobbs was given the opportunity to address the crowd at the 2005 Governor’s Pheasant Hunt benefiting the Pheasants Forever. Caucus Co-Chair Representative Richard Arnold (R-Russell) also hosted a dinner for the NASC, fellow Caucus Co-Chair Senator Jeff Lamberti (R-Polk County), and friends in southern Iowa. The weekend ended with lunch hosted by Tony Caliguiri, President of Boyt Harness Company and CSF Board Member.
21 State Legislatures Represented at Sold Out NASC Annual Meeting
The sold out Second National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses Annual Meeting - “Promoting a Pro-Sportsmen’s Agenda” - will serve as the premier forum for like-minded state legislators to gather in order to focus on state legislative issues impacting hunters and anglers.
The 2½ day conference is the only gathering that brings together state legislators, wildlife management professionals, outdoor industry leaders and the hunting and fishing community to formulate policy that advances the sportsman’s agenda and present a unified front in the halls of state government.
More than 25 Representatives and Senators from 21 states, along with representatives from Archery Trade Association, American Sportsfishing Association, BASS, Bass Pro Shops, Beretta, Boone & Crockett, Conservation Force, International Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies, National Marine Manufacturers Association, National Rifle Association, National Shooting Sports Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation, Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Safari Club International, The Nature Conservancy, The Outdoor Channel and US Sportsmen’s Alliance, will be migrating to St. Michael’s, Maryland from November 13 – 16. This year’s NASC Annual Meeting is co-hosted by the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus and presented by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
“The NASC Annual Meeting is the most important event of the year for state legislative sportsmen’s caucus program and partners. It is the only event that provides focused discussion and interaction among state policy makers and the hunting and fishing community,” commented Jeff Crane, President of the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation.
What started as a replica of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus in the U.S. Congress five years ago has evolved into 26 state legislative sportsmen’s caucuses organized under the umbrella of NASC.
“With 38 million licensed sportsmen and women who carry a likely voter rate of 80%, American citizens who hunt and fish not only take their outdoor pastimes seriously they also vote for candidates who will stand strong on issues of importance to sportsmen when in public office. The emergence of hunters and anglers as a grass-roots constituency and active voting bloc has drawn substantial attention in recent years,” continued Crane.
The NASC Annual Meeting gives legislators the opportunity to learn about model legislation they can introduce in their home state to benefit wildlife, hunting and fishing. The event also includes informative, educational seminars designed to update legislators on issues of importance to their sporting constituency and helping state sportsmen’s caucuses become more effective and engaged.
