Alaska Legislators Pass Measure to Promote Hunting, Fishing and Trapping
Earlier this month, state leaders in Alaska sent legislation to former Senator and Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus member, Governor Frank H. Murkowski that orders “the commissioner of fish and game, the Board of Fisheries, and the Board of Game implement their authority to promote fishing, hunting, and trapping and to preserve the heritage of fishing, hunting, and trapping in the state.” Sportsmen in The Last Frontier state can look forward to the Governor’s response within the next two weeks.

California Internet Hunting Ban Moves Forward
The Assembly Committee on Appropriations in California voted this month to release SB 1028, legislation to ban remote hunting via the internet. The bill passed the Senate 25-7 on April 21.

NASC on the Road to Expand Relationships with Anglers and Recruit Sportsmen Legislators
National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses staff members are trekking across the country in the coming weeks to expand relationships with sportsmen and the outdoor industry and educate state legislators about the important role of a strong voice for hunters, trappers and anglers in state capitols.

On Thursday, NASC staff and President Maryland Senator John Astle (D-Annapolis) will head to Pittsburgh, PA to attend the 2005 CITGO Bassmaster Classic which will bring in the nation’s top fishermen for the weekend-long competition. NASC representatives will be meeting with anglers, representatives of the fishing industry and state legislators to discuss ideas for model legislation regarding boating and fishing that can be promoted through state sportsmen’s caucuses. One of NASC’s Executive Council members and avid bass angler, Rep. Marc Grergley (D-White Oak) from Pennsylvania was instrumental in bringing the Bass Master Classic to Pittsburgh.

The week of August 2-6, NASC will travel to the American Legislative Exchange Council’s 32 nd Annual Meeting in Grapevine, Texas. With more than 2,400 members, ALEC is the nation's largest bipartisan, individual membership association of state legislators. NASC will set up a booth with staff and Senator Astle once more turning out to represent the organization. They will work throughout the week to spread the word about state sportsmen’s caucus achievements and recruit legislators to start caucuses in states currently without a legislative voice for sportsmen. On Wednesday, August 3 rd, NASC will host a dinner followed by shopping at Bass Pro Shops with Founding Partners UST Public Affairs and Bass Pro Shops for state caucus leadership teams and NASC partners.

From August 16-20, the National Conference of State Legislatures, another bipartisan organization catering to state legislators, will host their annual meeting in Seattle, Washington. NASC will be in attendance, this time with staff members and NASC Vice-President Minnesota Senator Pat Pariseau (R-Farmington) representing the organization at a booth. Again, the objective is to reach out to new state legislators with information about the need for increased participation in current caucuses and the expansion of new ones.

For more information about these events, or to join in the activities, contact Sidney Allen at (202) 543-6907. Due to the intense travel schedule of NASC staff, State Matters will not be distributed during the month of August.
