New York Passes Remote Hunting Ban
New York will become the latest state to pass NASC model legislation to outlaw internet hunting once the governor signs Senate Bill 2822. Through the work of the New York Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus this bill took only 20 days to pass after being introduced. NASC has worked with eight state legislative sportsmen’s caucuses sharing model legislation and providing technical assistance on bill language to ban remote hunting during 2005.
Illinois General Assembly Closes Productive Legislative Session
The first session of the 94th General Assembly closed last week with the Illinois Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus beginning work on several pieces of pro-sportsmen legislation and sending a key bill to the governor’s desk. The Caucus built upon 2004’s success of the “no net loss” of hunting lands law by introducing several pro-sportsmen’s bills in 2005. Legislation to provide more access to deer hunters across the state was introduced by Caucus Co-Chairman Representative Dan Reitz (D-Sparta), requiring that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to provide no less than 20,000 either sex deer permits in a year. House Bill 1074 also establishes a system to raise out-of-state license fees incrementally over the next three years in order to provide a secure source of funding for the state DNR and allow for improvements such as a new point-of-sale automated licensing system. The bill passed both chambers on May 27, and is now waiting for the Governor’s signature. Pennsylvania Remote Hunting Ban One Step Closer to Passage
House Bill 1435, which seeks to ban the practice of remote hunting over the internet, moved one step closer to passage on Tuesday. Introduced by NASC Executive Council Member and Pennsylvania Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus Member Representative Marc J. Gergely (D-White Oak) after a meeting with the NASC staff in April, the bill passed the House Judiciary Committee and now awaits a reading to the full House.
Louisiana Sportsmen’s Caucus Shoot-Out
The Louisiana Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus is bringing members out to the range for an evening of fun at their legislative shoot-out on Tuesday, June 14 in Baton Rouge at the Hunter’s Run Gun Club. State legislators from all corners of the Pelican State will be welcomed by Caucus Co-Chair Senator Joe McPherson (D-Woodworth) to join in rounds of trap, skeet and sporting clays as they set their sights on promoting the pro-sportsmen’s agenda. State caucuses are encouraged by, and have the support of, NASC to host events getting legislators out in the field or on the water to serve as a hands-on reminder of what we work diligently to protect.
