NASC Welcomes Back State Caucuses for 2006 Legislative Sessions
Immediately following New Year’s celebrations, state legislators across the country opened 2006 legislative sessions on Tuesday. States with legislative sportsmen’s caucuses coming back into session include: California, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, New York and Pennsylvania. Legislatures also opened sessions in Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Legislation affecting sportsmen to be taken up by caucuses includes Virginia’s HB150, which would outlaw releasing dogs on or near the property line of posted land in order to flush game to another property. The Wisconsin Senate will take up AB586 which was passed by the Assembly in December to allow youth hunters to begin hunting as early as eight years old. In Florida, Caucus Co-Chairman and NASC Executive Council member Baxter Troutman introduced HB471 to create an apprentice program by which new hunters may temporarily postpone their hunter’s safety course in order try hunting with a fully licensed experienced hunter. Nebraska Senator Mick Mines (Blair) introduced LB783 to ban internet hunting.

Throughout 2006 NASC will monitor legislation impacting sportsmen’s rights in all states and will continue to work with state legislators to provide the information and tools they need to advance the pro-sportsmen’s agenda at home.

Kentucky Elects New Caucus Leadership to Kick Off 2006 Session
The Kentucky Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus got off to a running start in 2006 by electing new Caucus leadership in both the House and the Senate. Representatives Robin Webb (D-Grayson) and Tommy Turner (R-Somerset) were chosen to serve as House Co-Chairs. Senators Robert Stivers (R-Manchester) and David Boswell (D-Owensboro) will act as Senate Co-Chairs. NASC would like to welcome these four pro-sportsmen legislators to their new roles with the Kentucky Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus.

Representative Webb, an active member of the Caucus since it was formed in 2003, commented, “Being elected as the Democratic House Co-Chair of the Kentucky Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus is a real honor. As an avid sportsman, I have been engaged with outdoor activities my entire life, and see the need to protect our outdoor heritage. Through good leadership and responsible law making, we can ensure that future generations of Kentuckians will enjoy the fruits of nature that we have been so blessed to benefit from in our lives.”
